Eve Arnold

Eve Arnold was an American photojournalist born in Pennsylvania, USA in 1912. Her interest in photography was sparked after a stint working at a New York photo-finishing plant in 1946 and two years later she learned the basics from Harpers Bazaar art director Alexey Brodovitch at the New School for Social Research in Manhattan. Her work features many well-known personalities, including Queen Elizabeth II, Malcolm X and Marilyn Monroe. She traveled the world documenting to poor and dispossessed in countries such as Afghanistan, South Africa and China. Her work from China featured in her first solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, New York in 1980. In the early 1960s, Eve settled permanently in London with her son, Frank and began to work seriously with colour photography while working for the Sunday Times. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers in 1980 and made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 1993. Ten years later, she was awarded an OBE. She passed away in London in 2012, aged 99.
